White rock exposed by the drying water
No rain in months, no crop, why bother
Only weeds grow here, who would ever buy
The animals suffer, they suffer and soon die
I stood at the bottom, nothing I couldn’t do
The world was mine, my worries too few
To mention the winter, that’s the undoing
Deceived by its fairness, its plan, I’m not fooling
We stopped in our tracks, we stared and stood
How can we dig in this spot, how we could
Every inch brings sweat or a salty tear
It was only a breath, a moment a year
Put away the past as we knew it would come
A relief you might say, the two became one
A mother is trying to mend every fence
Deep in our hearts, we knew nothing makes sense
My thoughts and my shovel dig a dark hole
I tried to pretend, with my life, a lost soul
Digging deeper, this heat, willing it come to an end
This ground that I’m breaking, my back it bend
Told that’s enough, what were you thinking
You must be lost or at least home and you drinking
The hole that I dug, maybe the reason not clear
Maybe a trap, maybe mirrors, pretend I’m not here
Laid to rest in this air that leaves you too soon
For you can’t breathe too deep, too many a wound
Why would you bother to work at this pace
I dug in the ground, thinking a race
We stood there alone, the boy and the girl
It being fall, their tears do they hurl
Dare do I wonder, and dare not to ask
Was it him, was it me, it came and it pass
This place where the water so soon disappear
Happened so fast, was I really just here
A question to ponder, to give it some thought
Every life that is taken, a life that is brought
That hole that I dug, well it’s deep that is true
But I knew to make happen, you wouldn’t do
Not a sound in the air, as the heat makes a cover
Slept with a woman, so long a dark lover
In the distance a vision, a feeling, a sight
Someone was here, the same ground they fight
If known would it be, the outcome so different
We’d left long ago with judgment so innocent
You’d never give up with so much on your back
So young they be, the train on the track
Yet look at it shake, and creek on the rail
The train looked new; it screams I am frail
The power it takes to move such a weight
Is more than imagined, last drop it would take
To start going forward, and yet knowing the end
Going to that water, going looking for a friend
As I look ahead thinking, or behind it would be
To a time when this dirt too hard, not for me
But the handle, the wood, the sharp, hard blade
You’ve taken from me and along with I played
The hole is there and the strength it is gone
But look deep down, made for just one
I think this wind dries the water and ground
For a better place to reside, no better around
I came to a place, once I thought it was new
I thought I found gold, and silver it’s true
If you look to the right that thing that I found
Is just like here, others in dirt they are bound
What a fool to think the sun, only warmth on me
What I thought a friend became my worse enemy
The life beaten, the breath was soon to leave
Can you think it happened, do you really believe
The hole in the ground dug deep more than once
Every person it will hurt, like in the gut the last punch
It brings you to your knees, it knocks us down low
Remember that sun, no water, gently cover the hole
