Narrator

Freight train is blowing
Loudly down a track
Our money is gone
Not ever coming back
And the problem is me

To stop the bleeding
We sold it all
Put it in reverse
Win, lose, or draw
Hope that brings clarity

Your mother couldn’t cry
Your dad understood
By then it didn’t matter
And to nobody it would

A hole in the wall
My sidewalk you tread
You cut them all down
Better left off dead

That one night, so clear
A shorter way to go
Stuffing himself in his pocket
Another game you throw

You left a car so yellow
Darkened by black stripes
I drove it away proudly
Always liked your types

Arm could hardly throw
Legs that cannot run
Eyes that barely see
So much for family fun

Drowning in our sorrows
Is still drowning to him
She wouldn’t let it happen
Time and time again

But with rain comin’
And music on display
The bandleader quits
And calls it a day
A game time decision
Medicine to kill a horse
Determined not to notice
Going from bad to worse

Pretending to pick a date
Saying all the right things
Wearing proper attire
And all her stolen rings

Took a step towards me
A step into the realm
Left an imprint so large
As if Satan was at the helm

Pretending to deliver
Acting in a play
Hard for you to understand
I’ve again lost my way

In the light of the sun
Warming up a soul
Then wondering the outcome
Something I can’t control

A scene inside a mind
Never to be heard
Though I tell you all
Trying not to say a word

What is left to sift through
The pieces to replace
Carried away at night
Left without a trace

It’s all been said before
Under the sun nothing new
A voice cries in the wilderness
Too soft and too few

I wish it could be explained
Written and recorded
What this made of me
Doctor thinks distorted

The starting pistol jammed
String on the bow it broke
The missile wouldn’t fire
From dreams I awoke

Starring out in the distance
Looking down the track
Contemplating the field
And if I’ll ever come back
